The Society was originally the Zagreb Section of the Yugoslav Society of Mechanics, which was founded in 1954 and later became the Society for Mechanics of Croatia on April 19, 1969. After the Republic of Croatia became a sovereign state, it changed its name to the Croatian Society of Mechanics (CSM). The CSM is a member of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) Udine/Italy, the Central European Association for Computational Mechanics (CEACM) and the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM).
